Personal Development

Personal development is the conscious choice to improve one's life to become a better person and to grow as an individual.

Striving to be better every day.

Our school motto drives our approach when it comes to meeting children's personal development needs.

This is underpinned by our school values, which are embedded into the way of life at Gretton and form the backbone of how we teach children to operate as responsible, respectful citizens of their school community, their local community and the wider world.

We are kind: through this value we teach children the importance of mutual respect, tolerance and understanding.  We emphasise how members of our school community, and the wider community, look after and support each other.

We try our best: we teach children to try their best even when things are difficult, to be resilient and determined to achieve their goals.  We encourage children to take pride in their achievements and recognise the effort they put in.

We make good choiceswe teach children to recognise, name and understand their feelings and encourage them to develop strategies to regulate their emotions.  We teach children to empathise with others and understand the impact of their words and actions on others.

We dream big: we encourage every child to believe in themselves and strive to be the very best that they can be.  We ask children to set goals, articulate their ambitions for their futures and help them to understand the hard work that will be needed to be successful.

At Gretton, we not only want our children to succeed academically, but through our planned personal development offer we:

  • inspire children to have high aspirations for their futures;
  • support children to understand what it means to make a valuable contribution to society and how to do this;
  • encourage children to apply for and take on leadership roles and fulfil the responsibilities associated with these.

To accomplish this, we not only provide children with a range of opportunities within the curriculum but also to make a wider contribution to society.  Examples of this include:

  • Groups of children visiting the local Baptist Chapel to engage with elderly members of the village community.
  • Children working with local community groups, such as the Gretton Parish Council, to raise awareness of key issues affecting the wider community such as speeding or increased dog mess on the recreation ground.
  • Our Forest School is based in a local playing field that children support with the upkeep and maintenance of.
  • Every year, children deliver boxes of harvest donations to elderly and vulnerable members of the community.
  • Year 6 children run our Macmillan Coffee morning - this year they raised over £600.
  • Elderly members of the community are invited to have Christmas lunch with children.
